Osteoarthritis (OA)

Stronger joints. Less pain. More confidence.

Our clinician’s have undergone specialist training so they can prescribe targeted exercise programs for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis. It’s designed to reduce pain, improve function, and help you stay active, and move with more confidence.

What’s included

1) Initial 1:1 assessment
We will hear your story, learn your past medical history, and find out or create goals – eg what you want to achieve from this program. Then we will do some baseline assessments to find out your current physical capabilities (strength, function, pain/discomfort levels). This will act as our starting point that we will build upon.

2) Education
Learn what OA is, what helps most, and simple strategies to manage symptoms day-to-day. When you find out the “why am I doing this exercise” you will be more likely to continue with our intervention strategies.

3) Supervised group exercise. In these classes (led by Exercise Physiologists) you will have a tailored-made program that builds strength, control, balance and confidence-building exercises, and can be progressed to your level. These are programmed over 12 weeks.

4) Reviews
We re-test your progress at the 6 week mark (halfway through the program!) and at 12 weeks. In these follow ups we re-test all the objective measures that we gained during your initial consult. This allows us, and you, to see all the progress you made (and hopefully you can feel it too)!

5) Follow-up tracking
Short questionnaires to track real life changes.

Class times

We recommend two 45-minute sessions per week. Our weekly specialised OA classes run Tuesdays @ 11:45am, and Fridays @ 11:00am

Who it’s for

Great fit if you have hip/knee pain or stiffness, have been told you have OA (or suspect it), and want to move better and delay/avoid surgery.

Not ideal if your pain is from fracture, tumour, inflammatory joint disease, or significant widespread pain (e.g. fibromyalgia). We confirm suitability in your assessment.

If you’re unsure if you are the right candidate, contact our friendly team and we can help determine if you are the right fit or if other options may be more suitable.

Does it work?

Our clinician’s have the expertise to develope a program that works. Australian outcomes from similar programs show:

  • 23% reduction in hip pain on average
  • 31% reduction in knee pain
  • Improved quality of life (24% hip, 38% knee)
  • Reduced use of pain medication (46% hip, 50% knee)
  • Fewer people wanting surgery after completing the program

Costs & funding

Funding depends on your individual circumstances. You may be able to use Medicare (GP Management Plan), private health, to obtain reimbursements for attending the program.
