Should Your Kid Pick One Sport? What the Science Actually Says About Early Specialisation

If you’re a parent standing on the sidelines of Saturday sport, you’ve probably heard some version of this advice: “If they want to go far in this sport, they need to commit now.” Tennis coaches, swim coaches, gymnastics coaches, they all say it. But is it true? Our team at PhysioHealth & Sports Injury Clinic dug into the research, and the answer might surprise you.

First, What Do We Actually Mean by “Early Specialisation”?

According to the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport), we’re talking about a young athlete (18 or under) who trains intensively, year round, in a single sport while excluding others, and who started doing this before the age of 12.

There’s a simple three question test to figure out if a young athlete fits the bill:

  1. Do they play or train more than eight months a year in one sport?
  2. Have they chosen a single main sport?
  3. Have they stopped playing other sports altogether to focus on just one?

If the answer to most of these is yes, and they’re under 12, that’s early specialisation in action.

Why Are So Many Kids Doing It?

It’s not hard to see why families feel the pull. Sport has become big business. Athletes can earn life changing money now. Scholarships (particularly in the US) reward kids who look like specialists early. More sports are getting recognised and professionalised than ever before (helloooo pickleball!). And there’s a powerful, seductive idea floating around youth sport culture: the “elite athlete” who was destined for greatness from age six.

The trouble is, for most sports, the evidence just doesn’t back this up. There’s no solid proof that intense single sport training before puberty is necessary to reach elite status later on. In fact, going all in early tends to come with a fairly serious list of downsides: higher injury rates, more psychological stress, and a much higher chance of quitting sport altogether while still young.

The Injury Picture: It’s Mostly About Overuse

A well known study by Jayanthi and colleagues (2015, American Journal of Sports Medicine) compared 882 injured young athletes against 398 uninjured peers and found some clear red flags for overuse injury:

  • Training more hours per week than the athlete’s age in years (so an 11 year old training more than 11 hours a week, for example)
  • Playing a primary sport for more than 8 months of the year
  • A ratio of organised sport to free, unstructured playtime greater than 2:1

A separate three year tracking study of over a thousand young athletes (aged 7 to 18, roughly even split by sex) found something similarly compelling. Athletes with higher specialisation were significantly more likely to get injured overall, and specifically more likely to pick up an overuse injury. Female athletes carried extra risk across the board. And crucially, those training volume red flags (weekly hours above age, and doubling up on organised sport versus free play) each independently predicted injury.

Some sports carry noticeably higher specialisation rates than others. Tennis sits around 46.7%, gymnastics around 30.1%, and dance around 26.3%. And when we compare injury outcomes, specialised athletes showed an overuse injury rate of 44.3%, compared to 32.2% for multi sport athletes. Distance runners who were highly or moderately specialised carried a 75% greater risk of musculoskeletal injury. Figure skaters training 12 or more sessions a week saw stress fracture rates climb from 24% to 33%. And athletes who specialised before age 12 showed a burnout rate 3.76 times higher than those who specialised later.

It’s Not Just About Injury, It’s About Movement Itself

Here’s the part that often gets missed in the “should we specialise” conversation: movement skill development.

Kids who sample multiple sports build a genuinely broad library of fundamental movement patterns, things like running, jumping, throwing, catching and striking, the general toolkit every sport draws from. Different sports load the body in different planes and directions, building bilateral competency. Varied surfaces, speeds and equipment build a much wider sensorimotor reference library too, which supports balance and body awareness long term.

Lock into one sport too early, and that window narrows. You get deep but narrow skill grooving, meaning highly refined sport specific patterns at the expense of movement variability everywhere else. That leaves a reduced adaptive motor repertoire (fewer stored movement solutions to call on when something unexpected happens) and a higher compensatory injury risk, since a narrower movement vocabulary gives the body fewer ways to absorb an awkward landing or a sudden change of direction.

As we like to put it: general movement competence built before specialising isn’t wasted time. It’s the foundation the specialised skill later sits on.

Junior Stars Don’t Always Become Senior Stars

This might be the most important point of all. A large systematic review and meta analysis by Güllich and colleagues, expanded in a 2025 Science review covering over 34,000 world class performers, looked at what actually predicts success at different stages.

What predicts junior success: an early start in the main sport, rapid initial progress, intensive specialised coach led practice, and little to no cross sport practice.

What predicts senior, adult level success: extensive childhood multi sport practice, a relatively later start in the main sport, gradual and steady initial progress, and only moderate specialised practice as a child.

Around 90% of top youth performers are not the same people who go on to reach world class adult status. Worth sitting with that for a moment if your child’s coach is pushing early commitment as the only path to the top.

The Genuine Exceptions: Gymnastics and Figure Skating

To be fair to the coaches out there, sampling first guidance doesn’t apply universally. A small group of sports genuinely have physical peak windows that arrive before adulthood, making some early specialisation closer to unavoidable.

Gymnastics and figure skating are the clearest examples. Elite peak age in these sports tends to land in the late teens or earlier, much younger than most Olympic sports. Training volume is often seven days a week of specialised technical work. And the injury pattern shifts accordingly, skewing toward overuse and growth plate injuries given how young these athletes are while training at adult level volumes.

So if your child is a gymnast or figure skater, this isn’t a call to panic, it’s a call to make sure their training is being managed by people who understand these specific risks.

What Should Parents Actually Take From This?

For the vast majority of sports, the take home message is refreshingly simple: let kids sample widely, encourage free unstructured play alongside organised sport, and don’t panic if they haven’t “chosen” a sport by age ten. The research suggests this approach doesn’t just protect them physically, it may well set them up better for long term success too.
